RETURN OF THE WAYWARD WORMHOLE

Those of you following from home might recall me talking about writing science fiction and fantasy in a castle in the Pyrenees. Here’s the photo from Locus to prove it was real, despite it having a dreamlike quality. If you, too, fantasize about absorbing practical and wise words from stellar writers and editors of fantasy and science fiction, while living in a fabulous setting, maybe you can! This year, the Wormhole comes to New Mexico in November. It will features Arley Sorg, Minister Faust, C.C. Finlay, and Donald Maass, as well as the ever-astounding Cat Rambo. Here is the testimonial I wrote once my brain had sorted through much of my experience:

For anyone who finds Cat Rambo’s online classes helpful, the Wayward Wormhole is the Rambo Academy on steroids. The instructors were not only brilliant writers but also experienced teachers adept at leading seminar-level classes and providing one-on-one guidance. They shared a wealth of insights into the business side of being a fiction writer. For those wary of traditional critique circles, Wayward Wormhole relies on a far more useful approach to supply writers with feedback that is both helpful and kind. I came home with sparkling ideas for improving four short stories, three of which I wrote from start to finish during the workshop. Bonus: The Wayward Wormhole sent out tapes of the classroom lectures and discussions one can revisit afterwards.

Start polishing up that submission story or novel and give it a shot. As the saying goes, don’t self-reject. I wish my writing buddies every success.

Obstreperous Stories

If you write fiction, you know the stories I have in mind, the ones that start with a neat idea or image, or character, or bit of dialog. The scene materializes. The characters rush forward to deliver their clever lines. Everything hurtles forward really well—all the way to the Great

NEBULA NOMINEES

This is one of my favorite times of the year to be a science fiction and fantasy writer. It’s time for members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) vote on the Nebula awards. Because I’m a voting member of SFWA, I read all the nominated novels,
